Well, a Richard Whittington, did become Lord Mayor of London.
However, Pantomime isn’t history, in the panto he was a poor county lad, with a cat, who sitting on Highgate Hill heard Bow Bells telling him to return, who then went on a ship where met a Sultan in a rat-infested country, his cat ate the rats, and greatful sultan gave him a fortune, he returned, married, Alice, and became Lord Mayor.
In fact, he was the 2nd son of Sir William Whittington of Pauntley, bought up in Gloucestershire, went to London, using family contacts became a successful merchant. So successful he even lent money to the King!
We have published Daring Dick Whittington as a Potty Panto. We have mixed the fairy tale with a little of the history, to create a fun, potty panto for your children to enjoy at https://bit.ly/3lHGWEU
