The picture above is of a Mercedes Maybach, it is the most expensive Mercedes, it costs around £180,000!
It is a car from the Mercedes Benz company with a history that goes as far back as 1886! Yes, it has that long a history. Mercedes Benz is the oldest still operating car company in the world.
It all started in 1886, the year in which both Karl Benz and Gottlied Daimler independently of one another launched their first cars. They were entirely separate of one another but only based 60 miles apart, but in that year they each produced what they both called an “automobile.”
Gottlied Daimler, had produced his first engine, the Grandfather Clock Engine, year before and had put it into what today we would call a motor bike, they called it the Reitwagen (riding car). It was the first internal combustion engine motorcycle. Today many still call Daimler the father of the motor bike. I say they were wrong; it was designed jointly by Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach even though the first Daimler-Maybach automobile wasn’t built until 1889.
It was in 1886 that Daimler bought an American Model coach and put a version of the Grandfather Clock engine into it. This “automobile” became the first four-wheeled vehicle to reach 10 miles an hour!
Meanwhile about sixty miles away in Mannheim, Karl Benz was building an “automobile” with one of his own engines.
Daimler never met Karl Benz during this period of invention. Even though in 1896 Daimler sued Benz for violating his 1883 patent on hot tube ignition. Daimler won and Benz had to pay royalties to Daimler. Daimler did not meet Karl Benz, even while they were in court in Mannheim, then even at the launching of the Central European Motor Car Association they still did not speak.
However, it wasn’t until 1926, well after Daimler died, that the two oldest automobile manufacturers in the world merged, creating Daimler-Benz AG. Keeping the names of Daimler and Benz in the title and that of Maybach on their most expensive model.
The names go on!
Isn’t history fascinating?
