Daniel Dalton has taken the St. Boniface story to create a Christmas musical The Magic Tree explaining the importance of the Christmas Tree.

Before Christianity:

  • The ancient Egyptians celebrated the recovery of the god, Ra, from illness
  • Romans marked the solstice with the feast of Saturnalia
  • The Druids decorate their temples with evergreen boughs.
  • The Vikings thought that evergreens were the special plant of the sun god, Balder.

Actually, Christmas Trees stayed outside until the 16th Century when devout German Christians brought decorated trees into their homes, however, until 1982 the Vatican City held the Christmas Tree as pagan, so refused to have one.
