He is the most interesting character in The Three Musketeers – The Queen’s Diamonds, a fictional musical, based on Alexandre Dumas’s well known book that focuses around real life people. One was Cardinal Richelieu who at the time was the most powerful man in France.
He became Chief Minister of France in 1624 and is remembered for his dogged defense of royal absolutism.
Later when the King died leaving his four-year-old heir, Louis XIV, a Regency was created between the Queen and the Cardinal, however, in effect it meant that the Cardinal continued to run the country until his death. Would you believe that he even attempted to continue to run the country after his death!
He left a will that instructed Queen Anne to continue his policies after his death. The Queen in the end had to go to the Parliament to overturn it!
