It came from the “Tales of the Arabian Nights”, but the Pantomime Aladdin is based China.

Aladdin was first performed in 1788, but it wasn’t a real pantomime. The baddy Abanazar joined in 1813 then came “Widow Twankey”, Aladdin’s mum, always a man, who ran a Chinese laundry, this lead to  slap-stick comedy, and another son, Wishee Washee, the fall guy.

It then needed magic that came from the story “Genie of the Lamp” but needed a twist to give Aladdin as many wishes as he needed.

This is how Aladdin grew into the pantomime we know today.

In our Potty Panto “Aladdin’s Lump”, Aladdin can’t find the lamp, so Abanazar locks him in the cave!  A sad Aladdin strokes a lump of stone, suddenly, a genie appears.  You can download the show  by clicking
